Our partners from RetroCollect, the UK’s number one stop for retro game collectors, will take responsibility for a number of unique tournaments in the re.play area of Play Expo over the course of the weekend, including several games that form our UK Classic Gaming Championships.
RetroCollect World Championships 2012
Following last year’s debut competition at Replay Expo, which used a reproduction of the iconic Nintendo World Championship cartridge, this year’s RetroCollect World Championships will follow a similar format, but this time using a reproduction cartridge of the Super Nintendo Campus Challenge 1992.
This competition cartridge gives players a set amount of time to accumulate as many points as possible. The challenge starts out on Super Mario World with the aim of collecting 50 coins as soon as possible. Next up is a two lap race of Mute City I on the timeless F-Zero. Then, with what little time left you have left, you’ll be given free reign on several levels of Pilotwings to make the most of the dying seconds.
Robotnik’s Revenge Challenge
Using a special ROM hack of Sonic the Hedgehog, retro gamers will be put to the test with a mere three lives to try and beat every single boss from both Sonic 1 and 2, one after the other!
Micro Machines 2 Turbo Tournament
We’ll be putting you up against 32 other players in a series of knockout rounds on Codemasters’ timeless 16-bit racer. With four players attached using the all important controller ports on the J-Cart, all you have to do is stay ahead of the pack, secure those points, and advance to the semi finals and beyond.
Goldeneye 007 Deathmatch
Do the terms Facility and Power Weapons mean anything to you? Excited? Well, we expect to see you taking part in our action packed Goldeneye tournament on the Nintendo 64. Whether you play it safe by hiding in the facility’s toilets or going in all guns blazing, be warned that Play Expo will no doubt be harbouring many seasoned shooters!
Other competitions being run by RetroCollect include a Sega Rally 2 Desert Time Trial, Pokemon Stadium Mini Game Challenge, Soldier Blade Hi-Score Tournament, Warioware Time Attack Challenge and a Power Stone 2 Battle Arena. Check out the RetroCollect website for further details on these challenges.
This weekend also marks the first chance gamers will finally be able to get their hands on a limited edition RetroCollect T-Shirt for the low price of £8 each. But should you be low on funds, be sure to win one of their competitions as every winner will receive one of these epic garments!
